When a group of students at Columbia University in New York launch a movement protesting the war in Gaza, they spark a nationwide uprising in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Encampments spring up at hundreds of other campuses as students object to their own university’s investment in the US and Israeli arms industry. Featuring detained student activist Mahmoud Khalil, The Encampments takes viewers inside America’s student uprising with incredible intimacy and urgency. Professors, whistleblowers, and student activists shed light on a moment that captivated the nation’s attention and continues to make headlines today.

Book Talk: Understanding Palestine and Israel with author Phyllis Bennis

Possible Futures, Mending Minyan, and JVP New Haven are proud to host author, activist, fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, and international adviser to Jewish Voice for Peace, Phyllis Bennis for a book talk and signing of her recently updated work, Understanding Palestine and Israel, an accessible primer text with crucial new analysis of current events. Join us in the bookspace this Saturday, April 5, 4at 4pm!

More about the book:

All the questions you’ve been wondering about—up to and including Israel’s war on Gaza and the election of Donald Trump.

People across the US watched in horror as Israel responded to the terrible acts of October 7, 2023 with a brutal war against the people of Gaza. They poured into the streets demanding Ceasefire Now—and protested the US government financing, arming, and protecting Israel’s war. A key question was when to start the clock—because none of those events actually began on October 7; all had their origins in events 17, or 58, or 77 years earlier.

In straightforward, accessible language Phyllis Bennis takes on that question—and many more—providing answers to the queries so many never before had the chance to ask. What is the Balfour Declaration? What are the Occupied Territories? What is Zionism—and do all Jews support it? Does Israel have the right of self-defense? What were conditions like in Gaza before October 7?

4/5 (Online) 3pm - Reading Against Empire: A Reading Group

Saturday, April 5, June 7, September 6, December 6, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM - Online

Reading Against Empire: A Reading Group

How has our world been narrated to us by empire, and how can we speak back against those narratives? What anticolonial strategies for reading, writing, and being do these works cultivate in their attention to British, American, and Japanese imperial projects?

Join scholars Sam Ikehara and Nozomi Nakaganeku to read and discuss Christina Sharpe’s Ordinary Notes, Dionne Brand’s Salvage: Readings from the Wreck, Crystal Myun-hye Baik’s Re-encounters: On the Korean War and Diasporic Memory Critique, and Wendy Matsumura’s Waiting for the Cool Moon: Anti-Imperialist Struggles in the Heart of Japan’s Empire.

Participants will meet online across four sessions to discuss these books with one another, though there is no requirement to join every session. They are also encouraged to purchase copies of the texts from the Workshops4Gaza bookstore, where all proceeds are donated to a different Gaza initiative each month.

Register and buy books here: 🔗 Reading Against Empire: A Reading Group — Workshops 4 Gaza

Sam Ikehara was born and raised in Oʻahu. Her research and activism emerge from her family’s histories and experiences across multiple wars and empires in the Pacific Ocean, particularly the U.S. military occupations of Hawaiʻi and Okinawa.

Nozomi Nakaganeku-Saito is an Assistant Professor of English and Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies at Amherst College. Her research focuses on the impacts of US militarism and Japanese settler colonialism on Okinawa and the role of literature and storytelling in (re)shaping relations to land/air/sea by centering Indigenous perspectives.

4/5 (in person, NYC) 2-9pm - Writers Against the War on Gaza (WAWOG) Town Hall & Fundraiser for Palestine

Saturday, April 5 · 2 - 9pm EDT - in person at the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, 124 Henry Street Brooklyn, NY

W.A.W.O.G. Town Hall & Fundraiser for Palestine

Join Writers Against the War on Gaza for "Free the People, Free the Land"—a town hall centering the rights to return, resist, and remain.

By Writers Against the War on Gaza

Join Writers Against the War on Gaza (W.A.W.O.G.) on Saturday, April 5 from 2–9 PM for a community town hall at the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn (124 Henry St, Brooklyn).

Our programming — including panels , performances, and readings — will center on the right to return to stolen lands, the right to remain in the face of ongoing displacement, and the right to resist the systems of oppression that perpetuate dispossession worldwide. Our workshops will offer practical skills to the movement. Our raffle prizes include rare art prints, revolutionary literature, jewelry, and clothing. Food and coffee will be available throughout the day.

📣 As the Zionist regime intensifies its genocidal assault on Gaza and escalates the violent displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank, the fascist oligarchy of the United States has declared war on Palestinian and pro-Palestine activists on our campuses and in our communities. In these moments of heightened repression, we must remind ourselves that the struggle for liberation is not a choice but an imperative.

🌱 Ticket and raffle proceeds will go to Thamra, a Palestinian-run organization in the northern Gaza fostering food resilience and sovereignty by restoring and cultivating farm land; and PALSHIELD, which supports farming communities in the West Bank through the provision of life-saving medical supplies, protective gear, and training programs to defend against settler attacks.

🎟️ Tickets are sold on a sliding scale from $0-40 with the option to customize your donation amount. Please consider donating; even $5 goes a long way. Free childcare will be provided upon request, and can be selected as an "add-on" to your ticket purchase. Please scroll down within ticketing section to view all options.

♿ The space is wheelchair accessible via a ramp on the ground floor, with a chair lift available to access workshops and vendors on the second floor.

😷 Face masks will be distributed at the door. Masking protects your health and the health of others; it also helps protect your identity. Air purifiers will be dispersed throughout the venue.

⚠️ While will we have a security team ready to address unauthorized recording and engage disruptors and other bad actors, we encourage attendees to consider their own risk level and notify event organizers if you see anything suspicious or out of place. We keep us safe!

4/4 (in person, ME) Weekly Rally @ General Dynamics, Saco (2:30pm) & Standouts @ Walgreens, Brunswick (5pm) & Camden Village Green (5pm)

WEEKLY RALLY OUTSIDE GENERAL DYNAMICS - ARMS EMBARGO NOW When: Fridays at 2:30pm / Where: 291 North Street, Saco, Maine
Join us in Saco for our weekly rally to call attention to the fact that General Dynamics in Saco builds components for the bombs being dropped on Gaza. General dynamics is the sole manufacturer of bombs used by Israel, according to a recent article published in the Portland Press Herald. The plant in Saco makes guidance systems for the MK-80 series warheads that have been dropped on hospitals, schools, residential buildings and refugee camps from Gaza to Lebanon. People of conscience in so-called Maine demand that General Dynamics leave the state and that GD execs be held accountable for profiting off genocide. 🗓️ Fridays 10-11 AM 📍 36th Street and 3rd Avenue 🌅 Sunset Park, Brooklyn - NY-10 Neighbors remains committed to gathering as a community to raise our voices for Palestine. We are deeply disappointed by @repdangoldman ‘s recent praise for Trump—who continues to attack the rights of marginalized communities, including immigrants, women, and trans people.

Instead of standing up to fascism, Goldman supports the deportation of students protesting against genoc/de. He champions Holocaust education yet stays silent as Trump calls for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Dan Goldman does not represent our diverse district or fight for all our rights. We continue to hold him accountable and demand better.

4/3 (Online) 9pm - Salon 54: Palestine in Print: Publishing & Archiving - Tools for Resistance (Letterform Archive)

Thursday, April 3 · 9 - 10:30pm EDT - Online

Salon 54: Palestine in Print: Publishing & Archiving – Tools for Resistance

Palestine in Print examines the critical role of print media in protecting and archiving endangered voices, histories, and traditions.

By Letterform Archive

Prompted by artists’ responses to the ongoing devastation in Gaza, Palestine in Print examines the critical role of print media in protecting and archiving endangered voices, histories, and traditions. Artists Ren Allathkani and Kate Laster, publisher Nicole Kaack, and archivist MJ Fair will present recent publications that center communities allied with Palestinian liberation: Passport of Witness (2024); a zine by California Jewish Artists for Palestine (2024); Prints for Palestine (2024); and art and zines by Librarians and Archivists with Palestine. While employing distinct strategies and materials, each of these projects emphasizes that publishing can itself be an act of resistance. A moderated dialogue will explore the role of printed matter as a tool to preserve communal memory amid censorship, while also attending to the key roles of archivists and librarians in engaging wider networks.

Audience Q&A will follow.
